PAUL J. NELSON TO JOIN PITT'S GSPIA FACULTY

PITTSBURGH, July 13 -- Paul J. Nelson, research consultant and policy analyst, will join the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) as an assistant professor beginning in September.

Nelson, whose teaching in GSPIA will focus on the non-profit sector, is currently an independent research consultant in the development assistance, foreign policy, environment, and human rights fields. He also was a research scholar in the University of Maryland's Department of Government and Politics.

"We are very pleased to welcome Paul Nelson to our faculty," said GSPIA Dean Carolyn Ban. "His international experience will add a new dimension to our outstanding program in non-profit management."

U.S. News and World Report, in its 1998 Guide to America's Best Graduate Schools, ranked the University of Pittsburgh sixth in the nation for its non-profit management program.

Nelson recently consulted on several projects with Christian Aid in London, Facultad Latinoamericana de las Ciencias Sociales in Buenos Aires, and the Congressional Task Force on US Policy Toward the Multilateral Development Banks in Washington, D.C.

Educational awards Nelson has received include the MacArthur Foundation Research and Writing Grant, Inter-American Foundation Dissertation Fellowship and the MacArthur Foundation Dissertation Fellowship.

Nelson received his B.A. from Wheaton College in 1978 and was the class valedictorian. He earned an M.A. at Princeton University and a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin.
