PITT NAMES NEW ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

PITTSBURGH, June 11 -- Beverly Harris-Schenz, vice provost for faculty affairs, has been named associate dean for undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, effective July 1, 1998.

Her duties will include serving as chair of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Council and leading and managing the team of assistant deans and other professionals that provides the academic services of CAS.

In announcing Harris-Schenz' appointment, CAS Dean-elect N. John Cooper said, "Beverly Harris-Schenz is an outstanding teacher who will help further the quality and effectiveness of the undergraduate education in Arts and Sciences offered at the University of Pittsburgh. While serving as the German language program director, she created an exemplary program for the training of teaching assistants involved in language instruction."

Harris-Schenz joined the faculty of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Pitt in 1974 after having taught at Rice University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She served as assistant dean of CAS from 1980 to 1985. Harris-Schenz received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1988.

On the national level, Harris-Schenz served as chair of the Foreign Language Advisory Committee of the College Board (1986-1990), as chair of the German Achievement Test Development Committee for Educational Testing Services (1985-1989) and as a member of the Foreign Languages and Literatures Advisory Committee to the Modern Language Association (1990-1992.)

From 1993 to 1996, Harris-Schenz was one of 11 members of a National Task Force charged by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages to develop the foreign language performance standards for students in grades K-12.

Harris-Schenz received her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and her doctorate from Stanford University.
