PEACE CORPS DIRECTOR TO ADDRESS PITT'S 1998 GSPIA GRADUATES
PITTSBURGH, April 16 -- Mark D. Gearan, director of the Peace Corps, will be the keynote speaker at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs graduation and honors ceremony Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m. in Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall.
Gearan was sworn in as the 14th director of the Peace Corps in September 1995. Under his leadership, Peace Corps volunteers are serving for the first time in South Africa and Jordan, and volunteers returned to Haiti in 1996 after a five-year absence. He also launched the Crisis Corps, a new program within the Peace Corps that allows volunteers and returned Peace Corps volunteers to provide short-term assistance to communities during humanitarian crises and natural disasters.
From 1993 to 1995, Gearan served as White House deputy chief of staff. During the 1992 presidential campaign, he was Vice president Gore's campaign manager, and was appointed deputy director of President-elect Clinton's transition team. He has also served as executive director of the Democratic Governors Association, and director of the Massachusetts Office of Federal Relations.
A graduate of Harvard College, he also holds a JD degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
