PITT MUSIC PROFESSOR AWARDED 1998 PENNSYLVANIA COUNCIL ON THE ARTS GRANT
PITTSBURGH, April 3 -- University of Pittsburgh professor of music Mathew Rosenblum is one of only seven recipients state-wide to be awarded a prestigious 1998 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Composers Fellowship Grant. Rosenblum intends to use the $5000 to support a film score he is composing for Los Angeles filmmaker David Lebrun.
Rosenblum, co-director of Pitt's Music on the Edge Series, is composing the score for Lebruns' independent film "Proteus" -- a made-for-TV art documentary that revolves around scientist/artist Earnst Haeckel and the relationship between art and science in the late 19th century.
"The score is a mixture of microtonal music, 18th and 19th century period music, percussion, and sampled ambient sounds," explained Rosenblum, who was approached by Lebrun about the project at a Los Angeles premiere of one of Rosenblum's compositions. "Proteus" is expected to make its debut at film festivals, air on television, and be distributed for educational purposes to schools and universities.
Rosenblum won a previous Composers Fellowship Grant in 1994. The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards composition grants every year in recognition of outstanding individuals in the arts throughout Pennsylvania.
