DEAR FRIENDS CONCERT AT PITT TRACES HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC
PITTSBURGH, Feb. 3 -- Dear Friends, the University of Pittsburgh's ensemble-in-residence, will trace the history of American popular music in a concert on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. in the Stephen Foster Memorial auditorium in Oakland.
As part of the continuing Center for American Music concert series,
"Songs of the Fifties and Sixties (the 1850s to the 1960s)" features music from Stephen Foster to Stevie Wonder and all the big hits in between, including ballads, folk and pop songs.
According to Dear Friends Director Jim Ferla, nostalgia is a recurrent theme in American music. "Although nostalgia and sentiment may have peaked in the 19th century, even rock bands produce sentimental love ballads," said Ferla. "This is a music that has endured and is an important part of the American experience. Its directness and simplicity has an appeal that doesn't diminish with the passage of time."
Dear Friends is a nationally recognized American music ensemble, with a repertoire based on the music of the American home, stage, marketplace and public square.
