PITT TO PRESENT "HARLEM RENAISSANCE" IN CELEBRATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.'S BIRTHDAY
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 8 -- The University of Pittsburgh's Black Action Society will feature "Harlem Renaissance," a play portraying African-American History in the 1920s, in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room.
The play, which is free and open to the public, traces the development of black cultural awareness and black nationalism after World War I. The rich arts movement, including jazz and blues, and social and economic conditions faced by blacks during this period will also be explored. In addition to these themes, the fight for equal rights and integration into America's armed forces will be discussed.
