Pitt Alumni Association Announces Volunteers of the Year
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association recently named its 2004 Volunteers of the Year and both the Pitt Alumni Recruitment Team (PART) and Alumni Legislative Network (ALN) Volunteers of the Year at this year's Alumni Leaders Conference held at the Petersen Events Center in Oakland.
Three people received the association's Volunteer of the Year award, which was created "to recognize and honor individuals who have enriched the life of the University through their volunteer efforts."
This year's winners are Loren Jefferies-Pulliam (NURS '92), for work with Chi Eta Phi sorority, missionary work in South Africa, and promotion of Pitt's School of Nursing; J. Byron Fleck (CAS '75), for work with the San Francisco Bay Area Alumni Club's signature event, "Links to Pittsburgh," and numerous hours in fundraising for scholarships; and Pitt Trustee Sam S. Zacharias (CAS '64), for work on behalf of the University as chair of the board's nominating committee, member of both the investment and executive committees, cochair of the School of Arts & Sciences' capital campaign effort, and president of Pitt Alumni Association from 2000 to 2002.
The award criteria are that candidates must have a Pitt degree and be involved in an unpaid volunteer activity perceived as beneficial to the University and its Alumni Association.
In addition to these volunteer winners, the PART Volunteer of the Year is Dominic Ebanks (CAS '98), who has volunteered for the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid in such capacities as chaperoning campus bus tours from cities outside of Pittsburgh and assisting in question and answer sessions with potential students, as well as representing the University at various college fairs in the New York metro area.
The ALN Volunteer of the Year is Carolyn Hill (CAS '81, GSPIA '91), an active member whose position with former Congressman William Coyne (D-PA) provided insights that helped to frame issues and strengthen the University's message in Harrisburg. She also is a mentor to new ALN members and students.
