Pitt's College of General Studies Wins National Award for Its Nontraditional Student Programming

PITTSBURGH—Pitt's College of General Studies (CGS) has won a national award for its week-long celebration last fall marking National Nontraditional Student Week.

Officials with the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), headquartered in Washington D.C., will present CGS representatives with the Outstanding Adult Learning Program Award April 3 during ACPA's annual conference at the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel, 1201 Market St.

National Nontraditional Student Week at Pitt kicked off Nov. 1, 2003, with the CGS State of the College Address by Dean Susan Kinsey. It continued through Nov. 7 with brownbag workshops on student success, lectures, career counseling, a coffee sponsored by CGS student government, films, networking opportunities, an Adult Student Information Day, and informal discussion groups.

"It was our goal to provide activities designed specifically for the ever-changing and diverse population of Pitt's CGS students," said Sherry Miller Brown, director of Pitt's McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success. The CGS provides quality continuing education for those pursuing college degrees, as well as those interested in professional development, personal enrichment, or career transition.

The annual award is provided through the ACPA Commission for Commuter Students and Adult Learners.
