Pitt Alumnae Council Spring Event Celebrates Women's History Month March 30
PITTSBURGH—A panel discussion titled "Strong, Smart, Successful: Women in the 21st Century" will be presented by the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association's Alumnae Council from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 30 in Alumni Hall's Connolly Ballroom, 4227 Fifth Ave. Several distinguished alumnae including 2004 Distinguished Alumna Jeannette South-Paul (MED '79) will speak at the event.
South-Paul is the chair of Pitt School of Medicine's Department of Family Medicine and a retired U.S. Army colonel. She is widely recognized for her research on the biological, social, and behavioral factors associated with premenstrual syndrome, treatment strategies for osteoporosis, exercise and aerobic capacity during pregnancy, infant nutrition, and exercise-dependent physiologic function in obesity.
Other panelists include Gwen Elliot, founder of Gwen's Girls and former commander of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police; Terri Miller (SOC WK '90, '92), deputy director in Pitt's Institute of Politics and a representative for Pittsburgh Action Against Rape; Kim LaScola Needy (ENGR '84, '87), associate professor and undergraduate program director in Pitt's Department of Industrial Engineering; and Reverend Catherine Munz, Episcopal rector and member of the National Committee on World Issues for Women. These women will speak of the challenges they faced while trying to achieve their goals.
In addition, there will be the presentation of the 2004 Alumnae Endowed Scholarship Award and a Silent Auction, in which the proceeds benefit the scholarship and the Lantern Night funds.
