Declare Yourself 2004 College Tour to Visit Pitt's Campus March 25

PITTSBURGH—The Declare Yourself Campaign's College Tour 2004, featuring an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, entertainment, and a voter-registration drive, will visit the University of Pittsburgh campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 25 in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. The Pitt Program Council is sponsoring the event.

The Declare Yourself College Tour is part of the Declaration of Independence Road Trip. Founded by Norman Lear, the Road Trip is a nonprofit, nonpartisan project that has taken an original copy of the Declaration of Independence and a multimedia exhibition on a three-and-a-half year cross-country tour continuing through the 2004 presidential election. The goal is to inspire young Americans to get out and vote. Honorary cochairs of the Road Trip are Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford.

Since January, the trip shifted into high gear with the Declare Yourself College Tour, the centerpiece of the effort. Nearly 20 campuses across the country will be visited by the end of March. The tour includes a spoken word poetry show, display of the Declaration, touch-screen voter booths, voter registration, music, and prizes.

Over the past 30 years, voting has declined steadily in the United States, particularly with the younger generation.
