Faculty Members to Be Honored for Teaching, Research, and Public Service during Pitt's 28th Annual Honors Convocation Feb. 27

PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg will honor 14 faculty members for their outstanding contributions to teaching, research, and public service during the University's 28th Annual Honors Convocation at

3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27 in Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Ave.

University of Pittsburgh staff, alumni, and students also will be recognized during the event.

Keynote speaker will be Catherine DeAngelis (MED '69), pediatrician and Distinguished Alumna, who in 2001 became the first female editor in the 116-year history of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Prior to DeAngelis' lecture, titled "The Importance of Caring," Nordenberg will confer an honorary Doctor of Science degree on her.

Faculty honorees will receive a $2,000 cash prize, a $3,000 grant to support their work, and permanent recognition with a bronze plaque, which will be placed in the University's William Pitt Union.

Four faculty members will receive the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award, which honors individuals whose efforts stand as an example of excellence in the role of University teacher. They are: Elmer J. Holzinger, a professor of medicine in the School of Medicine; Paul J. Kameen, an associate professor in the Department of English in the School of Arts & Sciences; Stephen Murabito, an associate professor in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg; and Lauren Yaich, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

Five faculty members will receive the Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award, which honors faculty members who have an outstanding and continuing record of research and scholarly activity. Three faculty members were honored in the Senior Scholar category: Kathleen Blee, a professor in the Department of Sociology in the School of Arts & Sciences; Angus Thomson, a professor of surgery and immunology in the School of Medicine; and Connie Tompkins, a professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Two faculty members will be honored in the Junior Scholar category. They are: George D. Stetten, an assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering in the School of Engineering, and Jeremy Levy, an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Five faculty members will receive the Chancellor's Distinguished Public Service Award, which honors faculty who have made outstanding contributions to the community. They are: Jerlean E. Daniel, an associate professor in the School of Education; Sabina E. Deitrick, an associate professor in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs; Christina J. Groark, an associate professor in the School of Education; Linda M. Siminerio, an assistant professor of medicine in the School of Medicine; and Stella Smetanka, a clinical associate professor in Pitt's School of Law.
