University of Pittsburgh Black Action Society and Students of the Department of Africana Studies to Hold Events throughout February in Celebration of Black History Month
PITTSBURGH—The film From Swastika to Jim Crow and lectures featuring Bobby Seale, cofounder of the Black Panther Party, and rapper Talib Kweli are events highlighting the celebration of Black History Month at the University of Pittsburgh.
A viewing and discussion of From Swastika to Jim Crow, sponsored by Hillel-Jewish University Center and the Black Action Society (BAS), will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 4, in the Graduate School of Public Health, Room G23.
Bobby Seale will speak at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at David Lawrence Hall, 3942 Forbes Ave. He will discuss the Black Panther Party, the protest movement of the 1960s, and the Future of the Human Liberation Movement, at a lecture sponsored by the Students of the Department of Africana Studies (SODAS).
Seale, no longer a Black Panther, has since published his autobiography A Lonely Range (Times Books, 1978), Seize the Time (Black Classic Press, 1970), and Barbeque'n with Bobby (LLC Publications, 1987), a cookbook from which the proceeds go to various nonprofit social organizations.
Rapper Talib Kweli will speak at 8 p.m. Feb. 9 in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room. Kweli, whose full name is Arabic for "student of truth," was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He began his career as a rapper in 1994 after forming a trio with Hi-Tek and Mos Def. After three successful albums, Soundbombing (1997), Lyricist Lounge (1998), and the self-titled Black Star (1998), the group went their separate ways; Kweli has since released two albums, Reflection Eternal (2000) and Quality (2002).
In addition, the BAS committee, Black Active Student InterCollegiate Struggle, will hold a three-day conference Feb. 26-28 titled "Wake Up Wake Up," starting at 6 p.m. Feb. 26 and 27, and 9 a.m. Feb. 28; all lectures and seminars are to be held in the William Pitt Union Lower Lounge.
Other events include a Black Consciousness Bowl, Gospel Night, and the Mr. And Ms. Black University of Pittsburgh Pageant, with a formal ball to follow.
All events are free and open to the public.
