Pitt Scores in Chronicle of Higher Education's Almanac Issue 2003-4

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh made impressive gains in a number of key institutional quality indicators reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education's recently published Almanac Issue 2003-4, which includes rankings of leading American colleges and universities in a number of different categories:

• In the category "Top Institutions in Federal Research-and-Development Expenditures," Pitt is ranked 15th nationally in this year's Almanac, up from 18th last year, moving ahead of Yale University, the University of Minnesota, and Cornell University; and it continues to outrank Penn State, the University of Southern California, Duke University, California Institute of Technology, and Northwestern University, among many others, in this category;

• In the category "Largest Endowments per Student," Pitt is ranked 15th in this year's Almanac among public institutions, up from 16th last year, ahead of the University of Minnesota and Foundation, the University of Washington, and the University of Iowa and Foundation, among others;

• In the category "Top Institutions in Total Research-and-Development Expenditures," Pitt is ranked 28th in this year's Almanac, up from 30th last year, moving ahead of Yale University, the University of Southern California, and the Georgia Institute of Technology; it continues to outrank the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Michigan State University, the University of Maryland-College Park, and Indiana University, among others, in this category;

• In the category "Universities Awarding the Most Earned Doctorates," Pitt is ranked 30th in this year's Almanac, up from 36th last year, moving ahead of New York University, Northwestern University, the University of Virginia, and Yale University; it continues to outrank the University of Colorado-Boulder, the University of Iowa, and Princeton University, among others, in this category; and

• In the category "College and University Endowments," Pitt is ranked 31st in this year's Almanac, up from 37th last year, moving ahead of the University of Rochester and Purdue University, among others; it continues to outrank Penn State, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Foundations, and Indiana University and Foundation, among many others, in this category.

The rankings reported in the Almanac were gathered by the Chronicle of Higher Education from information published by various institutions nationally, including the National Science Foundation, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the National Opinion Research Center.
