Pitt's Heinz Chapel to Kick Off Concert Series

Contact:

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh's Heinz Memorial Chapel will sponsor two organ music series and will host two additional organ concerts sponsored by the Organ Artist Series (OAS) committee of the local American Guild of Organists (AGO).

The Heinz Chapel Recital Series will be held Wednesdays, beginning at 1 p.m. Sept. 10, and the Heinz Chapel Concert Series will be held Sundays, beginning at 3 p.m. Sept. 28. Both series are scheduled to run until mid-April.

The recital series is being presented in cooperation with Ann Labounsky and John Walker of Duquesne University's Department of Music. The Wednesday performances will give Pitt students the opportunity to see Duquesne University students perform at Heinz Chapel. Staff in the chapel office also will be working with local schools and museums to encourage young students visiting the Oakland area to attend the live musical performances as part of their Oakland tour.

The concert series will feature the regular chapel organists as well as local guest performers. The Sunday performances will last about one hour, and the Wednesday Recital performances will be around 30 minutes in length. Both have free admission.

The OAS will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 23 and May 2, and admission will be charged for the two-hour performances. These concerts are presented by the AGO Pittsburgh chapter and will feature Steven Tharp in November and Richard Elliot in May.

In addition to the concert series, there also will be other musical offerings by the Heinz Chapel Choir and Bach Cantata. A listing of their events can be found at the chapel Web site www.discover.pitt.edu/chapel.
