Pitt to Sponsor Conference on Ethics in Education and Leadership
PITTSBURGH—The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) at the University of Pittsburgh is presenting its second annual conference on "Educating Ethical Leaders: Ethics for Public and Professional Life," from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 17 in the Victoria Building, 3500 Victoria St., Oakland.
Cosponsors for the event include the Center for the Advancement of Applied Ethics at Carnegie Mellon University, the Beard Center for Leadership in Ethics at Duquesne University, and the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at Pitt.
The "Educating Ethical Leaders" conference is targeted to faculty and doctoral students teaching or preparing to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It will focus on incorporating ethics in the classroom and on ethical dimensions of policy issues, such as war and domestic security and the AIDS crisis. A new theme this year will be preparing students for the ethical challenges of professional life.
The conference will open with an address titled "Assigning Responsibility in Contexts of Collective Action: A Brief on Teaching" by Iris Marion Young, a distinguished political scientist and ethicist at the University of Chicago. Breakout sessions will allow conference participants to learn and to share information about innovative approaches to teaching ethics, ethical dimensions of policy issues, and ethical training for professional roles.
The program features a panel of distinguished practitioners, including Perry Minnis, director of ethics compliance and advisory services for Alcoa Inc.; William Coyne, former U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania; and Helen Faison, former superintendent of the Pittsburgh Public Schools, who will speak at a plenary session on ethical challenges in public and professional life.
