Former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill Recommended for Election as University Director and Member Of the Executive Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Board of Directors

PITTSBURGH—The Nominating Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees today recommended to the board that it elect former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and retired Alcoa board chair Paul O'Neill a University Director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Board of Directors and a member of the Executive Committee of the UPMC Board. The committee's resolution nominating O'Neill will be presented to the Pitt Board of Trustees for action during its Feb. 20 public meeting.

O'Neill was a Pitt trustee from March 1988 to June 1991, serving as a member of the Academic Affairs/Libraries Committee and chair of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs' Board of Visitors. He was Chief Executive Officer of Alcoa from June 1987 to May 1999 and chair of its board from 1987 until his retirement from that position in January 2001. He was Secretary of the Treasury from January 2001 to December 2002. In 1989, he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to head the President's Education Policy Advisory Committee.

O'Neill earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in economics at Fresno State College and the Master of Public Administration degree at Indiana University.
