Pitt Chemical Engineering Joins Football Team in Top 25

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh's football team isn't the only proud new University group to rank among the top 25 nationally among its peers. According to the Oct. 28 edition of Chemical and Engineering News (C & E News), Pitt was ranked 23rd in the United States in federal support for chemical engineering research and development during the 2000 fiscal year. For its report, C & E News cited "Academic Research and Development Expenditures," a 2002 study by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering's federal research and development funds increased more than 30 percent between 1999 and 2000, from nearly $1.9 million to almost $2.5 million, according to the NSF study.
"This is quite an accomplishment, especially given the size of our faculty," says Gerald D. Holder, U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering and a professor of chemical and petroleum engineering. "It's a testament to the quality of the researchers and the reputation of our research programs that we have been able to attract this level of federal funding."
