PITTSBURGH—The Asian Studies Program in Pitt's University Center for International Studies is cosponsoring a two-day festival of traditional Japanese arts, noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 12 and noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 13, in the Frick Fine Arts Building, Schenley Drive, in Oakland.

The Saitama Arts Festival will include Karate demonstrations, a group of Taisho-koto (lap top harp) players, singing, Sashiko needlework and quilts, origami, calligraphy, and other activities. Cartoonist Taro Arai will present works by the internationally known cartoonist Rakuten Kitazawa.

Saitama City, Japan, is one of Pittsburgh's 14 sister-cities worldwide. Pittsburgh participated in the first exchange program in 2000, when 22 artists from western Pennsylvania traveled to Japan. This year, 29 Japanese representatives and artists comprise the delegation.

Along with the University of Pittsburgh, the festival is presented by a citizen's cultural mission from Saitama City and the Pittsburgh-Saitama Sister-City Committee, which is affiliated with the Greater Pittsburgh Sister-Cities International Association.

The festival is open to the public. For more information, call 412/741-3173 or visit www.gpsca.org and click on the icon of the Japanese flag.
