Pitt Program Council Presents "An Evening with Margaret Cho"
April 2, 2002
PITTSBURGH—Comedian Margaret Cho will perform at 8:30 p.m. April 11 in the University of Pittsburgh's William Pitt Union Assembly Room, in Oakland. Admission to the Pitt Program Council event is $5 for students and $10 for nonstudents.
Cho was raised in San Francisco and began performing stand-up comedy at age 16 in The Rose & Thistle, a comedy club above a bookstore run by her parents. Soon afterward, she won a comedy contest whose prize was opening for Jerry Seinfeld.
After moving to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, Cho began to perform at colleges and immediately became the most booked act in the market, which earned her a nomination for Campus Comedian of the Year. She won the American Comedy Award for Female Comedian in 1994 and almost overnight became a national celebrity.
In 1994, Cho starred in the short-lived ABC television sitcom, "All-American Girl," and in 1999, the much more successful Off-Broadway show, "I'm The One That I Want." Her show won New York Magazine's Performance of the Year Award and a Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) award, and it was named one of Entertainment Weekly's Great Performances of the Year. It was subsequently made into a movie and praised by Liz Manne of the Sundance Channel as "the indie success of the year."
Cho was awarded the first Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Golden Gate Award in 2000 honoring her as "an entertainment pioneer who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for all" and a Media Award from the National Organization for Women in February 2002.
