University of Pittsburgh to Host International Conference in Latin American Cultural Studies March 14-16

PITTSBURGH The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures of the University of Pittsburgh will cohost the third annual International Conference in Latin American Cultural Studies March 14–16 at the University Club, 123 University Place, on the Pitt campus. The conference is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Thirty influential scholars worldwide in literary studies, anthropology, philosophy, and political science will participate. The conference, titled "Borders of Modernity," will explore the repercussions of Western modernity in different geographical, historical, and social scenarios, especially in Latin America.

Most of the presentations will be in Spanish and Portuguese, but the two keynote speeches will be in English. Michael Taussig, professor of anthropology at Columbia University, will give an address titled "Law in a Lawless Land: Diary of Limpieza" at 5 p.m. March 15. Ernesto Laclau, professor of political philosophy at the University of Essex in Great Britain, will present a talk titled "Catachresia, Metaphor, and the Formation of Social Identities" at 3 p.m.

The conference is cosponsored by Pitt's Center for Latin American Studies, University Center for International Studies, Faculty and College of Arts and Sciences, Office of the Provost, Cultural Studies Program, and the International Institute of Hispanic-American Literature, which is associated with the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures.
