Pitt Faculty Earns "Professor of the Year Award"

PITTSBURGH—The Pittsburgh Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has named Christopher J. Earls, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Engineering, Professor of the Year for 2001.
The ASCE gives the award annually to recognize outstanding teaching ability, significant contribution to civil engineering education, and meaningful, published research that contributes to advancement in the field.
"We're pleased that Professor Earls is being recognized by his peers for his excellent teaching and scholarship," said Gerald D. Holder, USX Dean of the School of Engineering. "His professional expertise and outstanding teaching ability make him popular with his students and respected by his colleagues in the School of Engineering."
Earls, a William Kepler White Faculty Fellow, has earned other awards for excellence in teaching and research, including the Peter S. Michie Outstanding Teacher Award and the Phi Kappa Phi Scholastic Achievement Award.
His research involves exploring structural steel design, structural stability, and structural analysis using advanced supercomputers. Earls is chairman of the ASCE Committee of Compression and Flexural Members.
The award will be presented to Earls during the ASCE Pittsburgh Section's annual dinner meeting Feb. 23 at the LeMont Restaurant.
