The University of Pittsburgh Awards Scholarships to 53 African American Incoming Freshmen

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh Challenge for Excellence program (UCEP) will honor 53 outstanding African American Pitt freshmen from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24, in the ballroom of the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Ave. in Oakland.
Among the honorees are 10 Faison Scholars from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS); four Henderson Scholars from the School of Engineering; two Lavelle Scholars from the College of Business Administration (CBA); two Davis Scholars from the School of Nursing; one Chancellor's Scholar from CAS; and 34 Honors Challenge Scholars from CAS, CBA, and Engineering. The Honors Challenge Scholars will receive four-year awards, and the remaining 19 honorees will receive full four-year scholarships.
Five of these freshmen are from Pittsburgh; the rest are from cities throughout Pennsylvania, and from Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. They have all demonstrated academic excellence through their performance in high school and have received a wide array of honors, including membership in the National Honor Society and representation in Who's Who Among American High School Students. Many are active in community volunteer efforts, church groups, and student organizations.
The mission of UCEP is to increase the admission, retention, and graduation of minority students at the University of Pittsburgh.
