Pitt to Present Lecture by Pa. State Rep. Jake Wheatley

PITTSBURGH-Pennsylvania State Representative Jake Wheatley Jr. (D-Allegheny), a decorated U.S. Marine combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm, will serve as the guest lecturer for the Roscoe Robinson Jr. Memorial Lecture on Diversity and Public Service at 11 a.m. Jan. 22, 2501 Posvar Hall, 230 S. Bouquet St., Oakland. The event is presented by the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School for Public and International Affairs. Attendance is free, though an RSVP is required.

A Pitt alumnus, Wheatley (GSPIA '00) is only the second member of the Pa. House to serve on the Appropriations Committee as a first-term legislator. Now in his third term, he chairs the Appropriations' Subcommittee on Education and the Health and Human Services' Subcommittee on Health. In addition, he is a member of the Education and Transportation committees, treasurer for the Pa. Legislative Black Caucus, and vice chair for the Democratic Policy Committee. He also serves as a Deputy Majority Whip for the House Democratic Caucus.

Wheatley was first elected in 2002 to represent the 19th Legislative District of Pennsylvania, which includes such historic Pittsburgh neighborhoods as the Hill District, North Side, South Side, Allentown, Hazelwood, Downtown, the Bluff, Knoxville, Beltzhoover, Manchester, Arlington, Arlington Heights, and Oakland, among others.

For his service in the Marines, Wheatley received the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal.
