Former Judge of the European Court of Justice to Speak at Pitt's McLean Lecture on World Law Oct. 22

PITTSBURGH-Sir David Edward, former judge of the European Court of Justice, will speak at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law's 18th annual McLean Lecture on World Law at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Barco Law Building's Teplitz Memorial Courtroom, 3900 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

The lecture is titled "Nationalism, Constitutionalism, and the Future of the European Union." The event, free and open to the public and followed by a reception, is jointly sponsored by Pitt's Center for International Legal Education and the Global Solutions Education Fund Pittsburgh.

Edward served as a European Court of Justice judge from 1992 to 2004 and as a judge at the Court of First Instance of the European Commission from 1989 to 1992. A professor emeritus at the University of Edinburgh School of Law, Edward has appeared as counsel before the European Court of Justice and the British House of Lords. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1974 and Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 2004.

Prior to his judicial appointments, Edward appeared in a number of high-profile cases in Scottish and English courts, and also in the European Court of Justice.

His university appointments include service at the University of Edinburgh as Salvesen Professor of European Institutions and director of the Europa Institute from 1985 to 1989 and Honorary Professor from 1990 to 2008, when he was named Professor Emeritus; the University of Oxford as Honorary Fellow in University College and member of the Advisory Council in the Institute of European and Comparative Law; and the University of Cambridge as a member of the Advisory Board in the Centre for European Legal Studies. He also is a board member of a number of institutes at European Universities, among them the University of Birmingham and University College, London, and the Trier Academy of European Law in Germany.

In addition to his honors as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Edward was awarded the Distinguished Cross, first class, from the Order of St. Raymond of Penafort (Spain) in 1979.

Edward earned an MA degree at the University of Oxford. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Edward has received honorary doctorates from the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Münster, Napier, and Surrey.

Edward has written extensively on European-related issues.

The McLean Lecture on World Law honors the memory and contributions of Maclean W. McLean, a founder, executive director, and executive vice president of the Pittsburgh World Federalist Association chapter, now Global Solutions Education Fund Pittsburgh.
