SEC Commissioner Troy A. Paredes to Give Keynote During Pitt Symposium on SEC Oct. 16

PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh School of Law will host a day-long symposium, "The Past, Present, and Future of the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission)," featuring SEC Commissioner Troy A. Paredes who will give the keynote address at the luncheon from noon to 1:45 p.m. Oct. 16 in Pitt's University Club, 123 University Place, Oakland.

Also sponsored by the "University of Pittsburgh Law Review" and SEC Historical Society, the free public event will include four panel presentations. The symposium begins with registration at 10:30 a.m. Mary Crossley, Pitt School of Law dean, and Natalie A. Lesser, Pitt Law Review editor-in-chief, will give opening remarks at 10:45 a.m.

Paredes was appointed to the SEC by President George W. Bush and was sworn in on Aug. 1, 2008. Prior to his appointment, Paredes was a tenured law professor at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Mo. He also held a courtesy appointment at Washington University's Olin Business School.

Paredes' scholarly work has advocated for rigorous cost-benefit analysis when regulating and has emphasized the need for accessible and understandable disclosures that investors can use effectively. He has authored articles addressing these topics and is coauthor (beginning with the fourth edition) of a multivolume securities regulation treatise with Louis Loss and Joel Seligman titled "Fundamentals of Securities Regulation" (Aspen Law & Business Publishers, 2000).

Before joining Washington University's faculty in 2001, Paredes practiced law at prominent national law firms, where he worked on a variety of transactions and legal matters involving finance, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance.

He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1992 and from Yale Law School in 1996.

The four panel presentations are: Corporation Finance, from 11 a.m. to noon; Investment Management, from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.; Trading and Markets, from 3 to 4 p.m.; and Compliance and Enforcement, from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Peter B. Oh, Pitt associate professor of law, will give closing remarks from 5:15 to 5:30 p.m.
