Pitt to Host 2009 Japanese Film Series, Fractured Fairytales, Throughout October
PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh's Asian Studies Center will host a free public 2009 Japanese film series throughout the first three weeks of October. Films in the Fractured Fairytales series will be screened in 125 Frick Fine Arts Building, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. All films will be shown in Japanese with English subtitles.
Film titles and screening schedule is as follows:
"The Cat Returns" (Hiroyuki Morita, 2002), 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2;
"Memories of Matsuko" (Tetsuya Nakashima, 2006), 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9, with pre-film concert at 7 p.m. by the Japanese Choral Group of Pittsburgh; and
"Kamikaze Girls" (Tetsuya Nakashima, 2004), 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Teachers, faculty, and education students may register for a free workshop on using Asian film in the classroom that will be held prior to the film screening, at 4 p.m. in 125 Frick Fine Arts Building.
The film series is sponsored by the Pitt's Asian Studies Center within the University Center for International Studies with a National Resource Center grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education, the Toshiba International Foundation, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation and Mitsubishi Endowments, and Silk Screen, a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit media arts organization.
