PITTSBURGH-The America on the Move in Pittsburgh initiative (AOM), a community-wide program hosted by the University of Pittsburgh to improve the health of residents of Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania, will recognize Avonworth Middle School as May's "Schools on the Move" award recipient, at 10:15 a.m. May 15 in the school's gymnasium, 256 Josephs Lane.

KDKA-TV meteorologist Valerie Abati will present the recognition award; the presentation will be followed by an educational session on weather and science.

AOM's "Schools on the Move" program recognizes area schools dedicated to implementing innovative and effective initiatives to improve the health of children. Each month a different school is recognized. South Fayette Elementary and Middle schools were the April awardees.

The America on the Move in Pittsburgh initiative is part of a nationwide initiative through the America on the Move Foundation, a national nonprofit organization. Its mission is to improve health and quality of life by promoting healthy eating and active living among individuals, families, communities, and society. In its first year, the organization has hosted numerous events to raise health awareness and initiate fitness programs. There are currently 7,000 members in Pittsburgh, with approximately 300 to 500 new members each month.

In addition to the University, AOM community partners are H. J. Heinz Company, Del Monte Foods, UPMC Health Plan, and KDKA-TV.
