University of Pittsburgh to Present Lecture, "Elephants by Candlelight: Insight on the Poetic Soul of Iran"
PITTSBURGH-Fatemeh Keshavarz-Karanrustafa, author of "Jasmine and Stars: Reading More Than Lolita in Tehran" (The University of North Carolina Press, 2007), will discuss the poetry of Rumi-a 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic jurist, and theologian-and the influence of the poetic spirit on contemporary Iran, at 3 p.m. May 9 in 4130 Posvar Hall, 230 Bouquet St., Oakland.
Keshavarz-Karanrustafa is chair of the Washington University (St. Louis) Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literatures and professor of Persian and comparative literature.
The free public lecture is titled "Elephants by Candlelight: Insight on the Poetic Soul of Iran," sponsored by the Global Studies Program of the University Center for International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, the Consortium for Educational Resources on Islamic Studies, and the John & Lauretta Leone Memorial Fund.
