PITTSBURGH-The America on the Move in Pittsburgh initiative (AOM), a community-wide program hosted by the University of Pittsburgh to improve the health of residents of Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania, is expanding its community efforts to promote healthy living with "Schools on the Move," recognizing area schools dedicated to implementing innovative and effective initiatives to improve the health of children.

Burchfield Elementary School in the Shaler School District is the March winner. KDKA-TV meteorologist Valerie Abati will present the recognition award at 10:15 a.m. March 13 during an assembly in the school gymnasium, 1500 Burchfield Rd., Allison Park.

"The health and wellness of children is a key focus of America on the Move," said John Jakicic, professor and chair of Pitt's Department of Health and Physical Activity and director of AOM in Pittsburgh since its inception in 2006. "We are eager to highlight the innovation and success of school initiatives."

Area schools have been invited to submit an application to be considered for the award. Each month a different school will be recognized. February's winner was West Mifflin Middle School, 371 Camp Hollow Rd., West Mifflin.

The America on the Move in Pittsburgh initiative is part of a nationwide initiative through the America on the Move Foundation, a national nonprofit organization. Its mission is to improve health and quality of life by promoting healthy eating and active living among individuals, families, communities, and society. In its first year, the organization has hosted numerous events to raise health awareness and initiate fitness programs. There are currently 7,000 members in Pittsburgh, with approximately 300 to 500 new members each month.

In addition to the University, AOM community partners are H. J. Heinz Company, Del Monte Foods, UPMC Health Plan, and KDKA-TV.
