Pitt Irish Nationality Room Committee Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary At a Banquet May 19
PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh Irish Nationality Room Committee will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a banquet at 4 p.m. May 19 in the William Pitt Union Ballroom, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. This event is open to the public, but tickets are required. The cost is $30.
The Nationality Classrooms are gifts to the University from Pittsburgh's ethnic groups to preserve their heritages. The 26 rooms, built between 1938 and 2000, are each designed in an architectural style appropriate to the country for which it is named.
Dedicated in 1957, the Irish Nationality Room has one of the longest histories here at Pitt. The Irish Romanesque architecture, which flourished between the 6th and 12th centuries, inspired the design elements of the Irish classroom. The limestone room is similar in type, size, and materials to oratories first built on the west coast of Ireland.
The banquet will include Irish step dancing and music. Reservations must be made by May 11. For reservations or more information, contact William Regis O'Malley at 412-884-2060.
