Author of Leading Treatise on Patent Law to Speak at Pitt March 28

PITTSBURGH-Donald S. Chisum, a leading authority intellectual property rights in technology, will deliver the University of Pittsburgh School of Law's second annual Distinguished Lecture in Intellectual Property Law at 3 p.m. March 28 in Room 113 of Pitt's Barco Law Building, 3900 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

Titled "Heavy Hands on Hard Clay: The Supreme Court as an Instrument of Patent Law Reform," the free public lecture will be followed by a reception.

Chisum is author of the leading treatise on patent law, "Chisum on Patents" (Matthew Bender, 1978) and coauthor with Michael Jacobs of the textbook "Understanding Intellectual Property" (Lexis Nexis/Matthew Bender, 2004). Chisum continually supplements and revises the patents treatise, comprising 26 volumes, to include patent law developments.

Active in national and international professional organizations, Chisum has served on the board of directors of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and is former editor of the association's "AIPLA Quarterly Journal." He attended, as an observer, the World Intellectual Property Organization's Committee of Experts meetings on international patent law harmonization. He has been a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright, and Competition Law in Munich, Germany.

Chisum regularly lectures on patent law at meetings and conferences, having addressed the Judicial Conference of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the Patent Academy of the Patent and Trademark Office, the annual meeting of the AIPLA, and regional patent law associations, state bar intellectual property sections, and corporate and law school symposia in Arizona, California, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas, and British Columbia.

From 1997 to 2006, Chisum was professor of law at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, Calif., serving as the Inez Mabie Professor of Law from 2001 to 2006. He was professor of law at the University of Washington from 1969 to 1996. He received his A.B. degree in 1966 and his law degree in 1968, both from Stanford University.

This lecture has been approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Board for 1.5 hours of CLE credit. The cost for 1.5 hours of CLE credit is $25, payable at the door by cash or check made out to the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
