Lecture on Immigration and Racism in Europe Scheduled at Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems

PITTSBURGH-Ariane Chebel d'Appollonia, codirector of the Immigration & Security Initiative Immigration Research Network, will deliver a lecture-"Immigration and Racism in Europe: Old Prejudices, New Challenges"-from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP).

The talk, part of the CRSP Reed Smith Spring 2007 Speaker Series, will take place in the School of Social Work Conference Center, 2017 Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland. It is free and open to the public; lunch will be provided, and registration is not required.

Educated at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, often referred to as Sciences Po,

d'Appollonia teaches graduate and undergraduate courses there and is an associate senior researcher at CEVIPOF, the institute's Center for Political Research. She specializes in the politics of immigration and anti-discrimination in Europe, racism and xenophopia, extreme right-wing movements, immigrant integration, and urban racism. At Sciences Po, she was the inaugural director of the American Center and also headed up the TIRES program-a transatlantic research network titled Transnationalism, Immigration, Racism, Ethnocentrism, and the State.

She also has taught at other universities in France and the United States, and was a visiting fellow at Pitt's Ford Institute for Human Security and at Pitt's European Union Center for Excellence.
