Pitt to Host Conference on the Bologna Process, Address Higher Education in Europe and Transatlantic Cooperation
PITTSBURGH-In 1999, the nations of Europe signed the Bologna Declaration with the goal of creating the European Higher Education Area. What has become known as the Bologna Process has the primary goal of, among other things, promoting the mobility of students by establishing a framework of procedures and objectives to be followed by European institutions of higher education.
The University of Pittsburgh's European Union Center of Excellence, part of Pitt's University Center for International Studies, will host a conference June 23-24, titled The Bologna Process: Transatlantic Perspectives. The free public conference will take place in the Martin conference room, 4th Floor, Sennott Square, 210 S. Bouquet St., Oakland.
Designed to cover the background and context for the Bologna Declaration, offer case studies of European countries and the Bologna Process, and examine European Commission actions in education and educational policy, the conference aims to identify policy needs and impediments and to make recommendations in those areas. Additionally, part of the conference will be devoted to an overview of higher education in the United States and the issues surrounding transatlantic mobility.
Presenters at the conference include Timothy Thompson, associate director of Pitt's European Union Center of Excellence, as well as the executive directors or representatives of Fulbright Commissions in Denmark, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, and Spain.
Advance registration is required; contact Michael Deal at 412-648-1110 or at mdeal@ucis.pitt.edu to register.
