Pitt Trustee Herbert P. Douglas Jr., Who Helped Integrate University's Athletic Program, Recognized as History Maker

PITTSBURGH-University of Pittsburgh Trustee Herbert P. Douglas Jr. (B.S. '48, M.Ed. '50), who broke through racial barriers in both the academic and professional worlds, is one of six legendary Pittsburghers to be recognized for their exceptional historical contributions during the 14th Annual History Makers Award Dinner on Friday, April 28, at the Westin Convention Center Hotel.

Douglas, a1948 Olympic bronze medalist and founder of the International Amateur Athletic Association who helped to integrate Pitt's athletic program will receive the award in the "Leadership" category. While working at Schieffelin & Co., he became only the third African American vice president of a top-ranked national company. Douglas also created two prestigious awards: the Jesse Owens International Trophy Award for the most outstanding amateur athlete and the Jesse Owens Global Award for peace. He has been a recipient of numerous awards, including Pitt's Bicentennial Award of Distinction.

The other honorees include Stephen Flaherty, Tony Award-winning Broadway composer; Thomas A. McConomy, retired president and CEO and chair of the board of Calgon Carbon Corporation; Esther L. Barazzone, president of Chatham College; Albert B. Ferguson Jr., orthopedic surgery pioneer; and Joe Paterno, head football coach at the Pennsylvania State University.

Now in its 14th year, the History Makers Awards Dinner supports educational programs and exhibitions at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center.
