Poet Anne Carson to Be Featured at Pitt March 27

PITTSBURGH-Poet Anne Carson will give a free public reading at the University of Pittsburgh as part of the Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series at 8:30 p.m. March 27 in Room 125, Frick Fine Arts Building Auditorium, Schenley Drive, Oakland.

Carson's books of poetry include The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos (Vintage, 2001), winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry; Economy of the Unlost (Princeton University Press, 1999); Autobiography of Red (Alfred A. Knopf, 1998), short-listed for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the T.S. Eliot Prize; Plainwater: Essays and Poetry (Alfred A. Knopf, 1996); Glass, Irony and God (New Directions Publishing Corporation, 1995), short-listed for the Forward Prize; and Goddesses and Wise Women (Crossing Press, 1992).

Also a classics scholar, Carson is the translator of If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho (Alfred A. Knopf, 2002) and the author of Eros the Bittersweet (Dalkey Archive Press, 1998).

Her awards and honors include the Lannan Award, the Pushcart Prize, the Griffin Trust Award for Excellence in Poetry, a Guggenheim fellowship, and the MacArthur "Genius" Award.

Carson served as director of graduate studies in classics at McGill University and now teaches classics, comparative literature, and English at the University of Michigan.

She received a bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto.

The 2005-06 Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series, which runs through April 5, is cosponsored by the Wyndham Garden Hotel-University Place, the Pitt Department of Classics, University of Pittsburgh Book Center, and University of Pittsburgh Press.
