Pitt to Host Reception Oct. 27 Commemorating the Israeli Heritage Room's "Chai Year"
To commemorate the 18th anniversary of the University of Pittsburgh's Israeli Heritage Room, the Israel Heritage Room Committee will host a reception at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27, in the William Pitt Union Lower Lounge, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland.
Mediterranean food and Klezmer (traditional Eastern European) music, led by Henry Shapiro, will be a part of the festivities. The Israeli Room in the Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., will be open to those attending the by-invitation-only reception.
Distinguished Honoree at the event is Alshonor Research Integrity Officer in Pitt's Office of the General Council and Professor Emeritus Jerome Rosenberg, who was the 1991-99 director of the Pitt Jewish Studies Program. Awarding scholarships since 1980, the Israeli Committee has given a total of $81,500 to exemplary students who study abroad. The 2005 scholarship recipient is senior economics and music major Daniel Fuks.
The Israeli Heritage Room is one of 26 nationality rooms, all sponsored by groups interested in creating classrooms to emulate their cultures.
