Pitt's Heinz Memorial Chapel to Host "A Season of Music"

PITTSBURGH-Area musicians will once again serenade the University of Pittsburgh campus and surrounding community as the Heinz Memorial Chapel musical season gets under way with its second annual Pittsburgh Artist Series, which opens with Airplay Wind Trio at 8 p.m. Sept. 8. Also featured at Heinz Chapel will be the long-standing Organ Concert and Student Recital series, as well as concerts by Bach and the Baroque, Heinz Chapel Choir, and Women's Choral Ensemble.

All Artists Series concerts begin at 8 p.m. in Heinz Chapel on Bellefield Avenue in Oakland. Other scheduled concerts in the series are "Festive Autumn Hues" with Acoustic Swing, Oct. 20; "Standards and Originals" with The Douglas Levine Trio, Nov. 17; "American Popular Song: From Gershwin to Sting" with the Mike Tomaro Quintet, Jan. 19; "Daphne at the Movies" with vocalist Daphne Alderson, Feb. 14; and "London Symphonies" with organist Robert Sutherland Lord and conductor Roger Zahab leading the University of Pittsburgh Orchestra, March 16.

Airplay Wind Trio, the Artists Series season opener, was created to perform the diverse chamber music repertoire for flute, clarinet, and bassoon. Using the instruments in varied combinations, the ensemble explores music from the baroque to the contemporary. The artists are members of the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet orchestras and have been performing and teaching in the area for more than 15 years.

Season subscriptions and individual tickets may be purchased for the Pittsburgh Artists Series. The season subscription is $50. Separately, tickets for the Daphne Alderson Valentine's Concert are $20 each; tickets for all other concerts are $12 each. The Heinz Chapel Organ Concert Series performances are held Sunday afternoons and begin Sept. 18 with Robert Sutherland Lord. Additional performers and dates are Charles Heaton, Oct. 23; Richard Pinkerton, Dec. 18; Walter Greenwood, Jan. 15; Gretchen Franz, Feb. 12; Cynthia Pock, March 19; and George Rau, April 9. The Bach and the Baroque Ensemble will hold a Fall Concert Nov. 6 featuring music for strings, recorders, and voices by Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell, and Johann Sebastian Bach. The Spring Concert March 26 will feature music for baroque horn, oboes, and voices, including Bach's Cantata No. 39, Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot, and Cantata No. 65, Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen. Both concerts begin at 3 p.m.; admission is $12, $8 for seniors and non-Pitt students, and free to Pitt students with a valid Pitt ID.

Directed by Don Franklin, Pitt professor of music, the Bach and Baroque Ensemble was founded in 1991 to present the works of Bach and his contemporaries performed on period instruments. Choristers are drawn from the University and surrounding community, and instrumentalists come from the Pittsburgh area and locations around the East Coast. In recent years, the series has presented modern premieres of works by Georg Philipp Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, J.S. Bach, and Antonio Bertali.

The Heinz Chapel Choir, directed by John Goldsmith, Pitt senior lecturer, presents a cappella music from around the world. The Oct. 16 Fall Concert, Feb. 26 Chamber Choir Festival, and the April 23 Spring Concert are free and held at 3 p.m.

The Women's Choral Ensemble, under the direction of Pitt instructor Lorraine Milovac, will perform at 8 p.m. Dec. 2. Admission is free.
