PITTSBURGH-For the first time since it moved from Oakland to its downtown home at Heinz Hall in 1971, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is returning to Oakland, to give a special performance on the University of Pittsburgh campus. Through a partnership between the PSO and the University's PITT ARTS program, the orchestra will perform a program of works by Mozart, Fauré, Albinoni, and Schubert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14, in the Bellefield Hall Auditorium, 315 S. Bellefield Ave., Oakland.

This historic Pitt appearance-the orchestra's first in Bellefield Auditorium-will feature conductor Stuart Malina in his PSO debut and PSO trumpeter Charles Lirette as soloist in Albinoni's "Saint-Marc" Concerto. Malina, music director of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, won a Tony award in 2003 for his orchestration of Billy Joel's music for the musical Movin' Out.

An ongoing partnership between PITT ARTS and the PSO encourages the enjoyment of classical music on campus and in Heinz Hall. During the 2004-05 season, PITT ARTS sold 1,134 discounted Pittsburgh Symphony tickets to Pitt students, faculty, and staff through its Cheap Seats Program. Another 455 seats were purchased by PITT ARTS for its Free Arts Encounters program, which provides a free cultural evening for Pitt undergraduate students-transportation, concert tickets, food, and, frequently, a meeting with one of the event's principal artists. Because of the popularity of the Free Arts Encounters program, PITT ARTS has purchased even more symphony tickets this season.

Pitt students, faculty, and staff can purchase tickets to the Oct. 14 performance in Room 929 of the William Pitt Union. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for faculty and staff, and $10 for students.
