Pittsburgh junior earns scholarship

PITTSBURGH — University of Pittsburgh junior Simon Brown of Cranberry Township has been awarded a 2014 Beinecke Scholarship, a national award for students to pursue graduate study in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Brown is one of only 20 students in the nation to be chosen for the award. He will receive $4,000 upon completion of his undergraduate study at Pitt as well as an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school.

Through the scholarship, Brown plans to earn a Ph.D. in history.

He founded Education and Edibles, a book club funded by Pitt’s University Honors College. Brown has been the editor for the Pitt Political Review and had been a biweekly columnist for the Pitt News.

In addition, Brown is an ambassador for the University Honors College and a member of the Honors Student Advisory Board.

Brown’s community service included being a tutor in the Pittsburgh Public Schools through Pitt’s Center for Urban Education as well as a mentor for the nonprofit educational organization Higher Achievement.
