Pitt’s First Community Engagement Center to Open in Homewood

Celebration on Oct. 18 will launch new home to programs and services for children, adults, seniors and families

Pitt’s Community Engagement Centers (CEC) are part of the University’s Neighborhood Commitments, an effort to build stronger communities and a stronger University through long-term partnerships in select city neighborhoods.

Following more than a year of planning in partnership with the community, the CEC in Homewood is the first to open. Planning for a second CEC, in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, has begun.

WHAT: In partnership with the Homewood community, the University of Pittsburgh will open its first Community Engagement Center (CEC) as a front door to Pitt’s programs and services for area residents of all ages. The grand opening celebration will be a party featuring food, family activities with prizes and tours of the center. Representatives of many programs and initiatives that will be housed in Pitt’s CEC in Homewood will be on hand to talk about all the free offerings.

WHEN: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018. Brief remarks and ribbon-cutting at 6:15-6:30 p.m.


  • Neighbors and community leaders, including Rev. John M. Wallace, Jr., senior pastor of Bible Center Church in Homewood, David E. Epperson Endowed Chair and professor in the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work
  • Neighborhood advisory council members and CEC Homewood staff
  • Pitt Chancellor Patrick Gallagher with other administrators, faculty, staff and students
  • Local government officials, including Chief of Staff Dan Gilman of the Office of the Mayor and Chief of Staff Marita Bradley of the Office of Pittsburgh City Councilman Rev. Ricky Burgess
