Pittsburgh, Oct. 9 -- Anthony J. DeArdo, professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, has been elected a Fellow of ASM International, formerly the American Society of Metals. The award will be presented at the ASM Materials Solutions Conference and Expo in St. Louis, MO, Oct. 9-12.

DeArdo, of Mt. Lebanon, was lauded by the ASM "for outstanding contributions in the area of microalloyed steels, in particular relating to fundamental structure-property relationships and thermomechanical processing."

DeArdo is one of the co-inventors of unleaded "green steel," which is replacing leaded steel in many machine shops. DeArdo and colleague C. Isaac Garcia have been commended for their invention with an award from the Air and Waste Management Association, and by being named a semifinalist in the Discover Magazine Awards for Technological Innovation in 1999.
