PITTSBURGH—The Property and Facilities Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees today approved $3,489,360 for step one of a renovation project for the 17th-floor laboratory of the Thomas E. Starzl Biomedical Science Tower. The project is expected to create 18 construction and seven support jobs.

The renovations will convert dated lab space into a large, flexible open laboratory that will create more opportunities for collaboration between researchers in the School of Medicine’s Department of Cardiology. Improved lighting and modernized infrastructure for the lab, which was built in 1989, are also expected to help recruit and retain talented faculty to the department and to allow flexibility to respond to changing research priorities and instrumentation needs.
