Mental Health Risk Factors in Nonwhites Is Focus of Sept. 12 Lecture at Pitt
PITTSBURGH- Internationally recognized author and community mental wellness expert Carl C. Bell will deliver a lecture titled "Mental Health Risk Factors in Nonwhite Populations" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at Pitt's Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), 2017 Cathedral of Learning, 4200 Fifth Ave., Oakland.
The event kicks off the Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Fall 2007 Speaker Series. The lecture is free and open to the public; lunch will be provided. Registration is not required.
Bell is president and CEO of Community Mental Health Council, Inc., in Chicago and principal investigator with CHAMP, an HIV/AIDS youth prevention research project in South Africa. He has maintained a psychiatric practice for 35 years and is a clinical professor of psychiatry and public health in the University of Illinois School of Medicine.
Bell is the author of "The Sanity of Survival: Reflections on Community Mental Health and Wellness" (Third World Press, 2004) and coauthor of Suicide and Homicide Among Adolescents (Guilford Press, 1994). He has published more than 350 articles on mental health issues and has lectured on mental health and violence prevention worldwide. He has been interviewed by the "New York Times," "Chicago Tribune Magazine," "The Today Show," "CBS Sunday Morning," and many other media outlets.
In recognition of his efforts to reduce violence, Bell became the first recipient of the American Psychiatric Foundation's Minority Service Award, in 2004. He is also the recipient of the American Psychiatric Association's Presidential Award.
